ABOUT THIS COURSE The Introduction to Travel Health Course comprises the two days of learning recommended by the RCN Competency framework publication and follows the curriculum for registered healthcare practitioners as described in the 'Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service' document from the Faculty of Travel Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. The Ten Point Framework of topics for inclusion describing essential training for travel medicine can be viewed from page 33 of the publication (see the link above). This e learning course will take you through these topics, and if you choose to explore all the material, it will increase your knowledge further and may take longer than a two day face to face training programme would have time for. LENGTH OF TIME ALLOWED TO ACCESS THE COURSE You will have EIGHT weeks to complete the course and explore all the resources if you wish to do so. If you complete the training earlier than the eight weeks, you will continue to have access to the training until the expiry date. Many downloadable resources are provided within the training for use in the future, in addition to multiple resources on Jane Chiodini’s website. Therefore, please purchase the course when you know you are ready to start the training. Travel health is a fast moving field of practice and although services were severely impacted with the COVID-19 pandemic, travellers are seeking advice once more and practitioners are very busy again. It is recommended to undertake a travel health update, ideally annually, although when you have to focus on many other areas of care this isn't always possible. This online platform has been created by Jane Chiodini to help the learner update, but at their own pace and at a time suitable to them. The learner can also revisit lectures and resources as often as needed, within the timeframe allowed on the platform. This learning includes videos, vibrant interactive e learning sections, reading, resources, time out activities and so much more - all created by Jane ! Topics addressed within this learning programme: Climate change and the impact on travel health Arboviral infections (malaria, dengue, Zika and TBE) The Challenging traveller (older and last minute travellers) Test your vaccine knowledge (including travel vaccines and immunisation issues ) Travel health news - past and present (including measles and polio) Best practice in delivering travel health (including FAQs) Case studies (four complex cases) How do I? The course comprises 8 hours of learning but you will have 4 weeks in which to complete it. If you finish before this timescale you continue to have access to the platform until the date of expiry. The opportunity to ask questions and engage with an online forum to answer your questions is available but no online meetings are required for this course - you can study it at your own pace when it suits you. There is also a facility to e mail Jane directly within the platform if you have any queries arising from the training. This short learning is part of one module from the current Travel Health Update course offered by Jane Chiodini. This has been provided in conjunction with a recent Travel Health Update in Practice Nurse Journal found here. The original intention was to provide this module of learning on the two dilemmas described, but I decided to provide access to all five dilemmas free of charge on this occasion, because I appreciate it is an issue for some practitioners working in a primary care setting in particular. The five scenarios are: GP Surgery refusing to provide a travel service GP service only giving the travel vaccines but not performing a risk assessment or giving advice One nurse performing a risk assessment and then passing on the task of giving the vaccine(s) and advice to colleague Follow up doses of vaccine - who should be performing this? Writing of a PSD - who should take responsibility for the task? The scenarios are discussed in a digital platform which includes not only a presentation with a voiceover, but also the notes and quick access to interesting resources. A handout is available to keep including the weblinks to many of the resources mentioned, along with other materials which will be of use within your day to day practice. PLEASE NOTE: you will have one week to complete the course which starts when you purchase the training - this is being given to you free of charge. So please time this for when you want to begin the education - it won't take long to study. ON COMPLETION: a certificate for one hour of learning will be provided. This short elearning is part of the arboviral infections module from the current Travel Health Update course offered by Jane Chiodini. WHY IS THIS COURSE FREELY AVAILABLE? On 15th October 2024, Dengue: the green book, chapter 15a was published. This introduced a new vaccine for dengue, called Qdenga ®. Jane said 'for those of you who have studied my 'Travel Health Update' course recently, I felt it was useful to allow you to access this learning material, which wasn't available when you studied the course. And if you didn't take the course, but would like to learn about this topic, the course is made available for a short period of time free of charge, if you wish to enrol'. WHY IS THIS LEARNING IMPORTANT? The elearning introduces you to the knowledge surrounding the use of Qdenga ® as described in the national guidance, which has taken a precautionary approach at the current time. It is very important for travel health practitioners though, to understand the importance of dengue illness, and particularly for those of you working in general practice, to allow you to advise travellers and refer on, if vaccination is an option and appropriate, in addition to providing mosquito bite avoidance advice. WHO IS THIS COURSE MOST SUITABLE FOR? The course is most suitable for practitioners working in primary care who may not be giving private travel vaccines (which would include Qdenga ®) but need to refer travellers to a private travel clinic setting for such protection, following a thorough pre-travel risk assessment. It may also be helpful to the many pharmacists who provide travel health as well. If you already work in a specialist private travel clinic setting, then this learning may not fulfill your expectations in answering the many grey areas which remain about the use of Qdenga ® in the UK. The subject is complex and this probably requires a thorough clinical conversation to formulate a suitable policy within your workplace. WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS AND BENEFITS FROM STUDYING THIS COURSE? You will have one week to complete the course which starts when you 'purchase' the training - this is being given to you free of charge. So please time this study for when you want to begin the education. On completion, a certificate for 1 hour of learning will be provided.
