Description

This short elearning is part of the arboviral infections module from the current Travel Health Update course offered by Jane Chiodini.

WHY IS THIS COURSE FREELY AVAILABLE?

On 15th October 2024, Dengue: the green book, chapter 15a was published.  This introduced a new vaccine for dengue, called Qdenga ®.  Jane said 'for those of you who have studied my 'Travel Health Update' course recently, I felt it was useful to allow you to access this learning material, which wasn't available when you studied the course.  And if you didn't take the course, but would like to learn about this topic, the course is made available for a short period of time free of charge, if you wish to enrol'.

WHY IS THIS LEARNING IMPORTANT?

The elearning introduces you to the knowledge surrounding the use of Qdenga ® as described in the national guidance, which has taken a precautionary approach at the current time.  It is very important for travel health practitioners though, to understand the importance of dengue illness, and particularly for those of you working in general practice, to allow you to advise travellers and refer on, if vaccination is an option and appropriate, in addition to providing mosquito bite avoidance advice.

WHO IS THIS COURSE MOST SUITABLE FOR?

The course is most suitable for practitioners working in primary care who may not be giving private travel vaccines (which would include Qdenga ®) but need to refer travellers to a private travel clinic setting for such protection, following a thorough pre-travel risk assessment.  It may also be helpful to the many pharmacists who provide travel health as well.  If you already work in a specialist private travel clinic setting, then this learning may not fulfill your expectations in answering the many grey areas which remain about the use of Qdenga ® in the UK.  The subject is complex and this probably requires a thorough clinical conversation to formulate a suitable policy within your workplace.

WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS AND BENEFITS FROM STUDYING THIS COURSE?

You will have one week to complete the course which starts when you 'purchase' the training - this is being given to you free of charge.  So please time this study for when you want to begin the education.  On completion, a certificate for 1 hour of learning will be provided.
